Comparison

Day 12

It's like comparing apples and oranges: they're both delicious." Cyd Charisse

One of my focuses for 2022 is to mind my own business. That includes not placing too much energy in what's going on in the lives of others, particularly if comparing mine to theirs. No two people will live the same experience, and no two people may fully understand another's journey. Rather than scrolling through our phones, looking at others appearing to live their best lives, we need to focus our attention on creating our own best life. When we cross the bridge of not looking to the experiences of others as inspiration and fall into a pit of comparison, all we end up doing is getting caught up in a story created in our own heads.

The story has been told too often where lives that were idolized for their relationships, wealth, success, beauty etc., were learned to be not so happy or just not what we expected. Comparison is often based on the results we see but without true understanding of the process it took for that person to manifest that thing we think we should have.

I think comparison is more than just the thief of joy. It's a denial of who you are and removes you from taking the time to honor and trust your own journey in this life. Life is too precious to spend if focused on what someone else has. Shift that focus to being inspired by others as benchmarks to create your individual experience, and trust that what is right for you will be.

“Comparison is an act of violence against the self.” Iyanla Vanzant
